Life of Space - Chapter 22

CLONE #1

So these are the wimps we have to train?

Said the first clone, in English, stepping out of the spaceship.

CLONE #2

I'm afraid so, X-466. We landed on the exact coordinates they provided us with. Unless they messed up again...

Replied the second, also in English, stepping out behind X-466.

X-466

Are you sure R-328? They don't look worthy of our ship...

R-328

You think so? The boss says differently.

X-466

Well, the boss is getting older...

R-328

He doesn't really age though...

X-466

They smell so bad!

Said X-466, pinching his nose shut.

X-466

They smell like raw quekzar...

R-328

But doesn't cooked quekzar smell delicious?

X-466

Your point being?

R-328

Give them a chance!

X-466

I suppose you are right... Besides, we have orders to carry out. HEY YOU!

Said X-466 towards the closest person to him.

X-466

Are you... R-328, what's the name?

R-328

Boris Mikhaylovich Schastlivtsev.

X-466

Are you Boris Mikhaylovich Schas... BORIS MIKHAYLOVICH SCHASTLIV... ARE YOU?!

The little girl X-466 was addressing was too scared to answer...

BORIS

That is me, Boris Mikhaylovich Schastlivtsev.

Said the tall, bearded man walking towards the two clones.

BORIS

You call me Boris...

He swiftly hugged X-466 and kissed him on the mouth.

BORIS

I am director here. Dobró pozhálovat'!

R-328

Bol'shóe spasíbo Boris.

Answered R-328, before hugging and kissing the director, also on the mouth.

BORIS

You speak Russian, good man!

R-328

I speak most of your languages by now.

BORIS

And you just got here... Impressive! Let me introduce Irina Petrova, Russian candidate.

Irina stepped out form the crowd and headed towards them, but X-466 said abruptly

X-466

Mister Boris, we have no interest in meeting any particular candidate.

BORIS

Why are you here then?

Asked Boris, disconcerted.

X-466

Let this be clear to all of you!

Loudly proclaimed X-466 to the people gathered before him.

X-466

I don't care who you are, I don't care where you're from!

You come from a stinking planet, from a primitive species, and frankly you are not worthy of our time, much less our help.

R-328

I wouldn't quite put it that way...

X-466 ignored him.

X-466

For some reason our boss, Konos, has decided otherwise, so here we are... stuck with you...

Everybody was silent, shocked.

X-466

I don't want any of you to come with us, and I am going to do everything I can to stop you from coming.

If, by any chance, there is anyone among you lot who is able to survive what I have in store for you, then maybe I will consider the possibility of changing my mind.

BORIS

That is not what we agreed!

Tried to object Boris, but X-466 ignored him and went on with his speech.

X-466

You think that just because you were born you are entitled to what you want; so you take, and take, and take without regard for everything else around you.

We, on the other hand, have lived our entire lives on that ship.

Said X-466 pointing to their starship beside the Moon.

X-466

Life in space is all about discipline and self-denial. Your one fundamental concern cannot be your own survival, but the survival of those around you, a concept I'm not sure you can comprehend...

Boris tried interjecting again, but X-466 continued, unconcerned.

X-466

Your species is clearly nothing but an evolutionary mistake and the sooner you die off, the better it is for the rest of us.

X-466 stopped talking, so the other clone said with a smile

R-328

Good luck with the selection everyone!
